Management of Care accounts for the largest percentage of questions on the NCLEX-RN (approximately 17-23%). This category tests your ability to provide and direct nursing care that enhances care delivery to clients and staff.
Delegation Principles
Understanding delegation is critical for NCLEX success. Use the Five Rights of Delegation: Right Task, Right Circumstance, Right Person, Right Direction/Communication, and Right Supervision/Evaluation. RNs can delegate tasks to LPNs/LVNs and UAPs but cannot delegate assessment, teaching, evaluation, or tasks requiring nursing judgment. LPNs can perform tasks within their scope including medication administration, wound care, and data collection.
Priority-Setting Frameworks
ABCs (Airway, Breathing, Circulation) take precedence in acute situations. Maslow Hierarchy of Needs guides prioritization from physiological needs upward. The nursing process framework (Assessment before Intervention) helps when questions ask what to do first. Acute conditions take priority over chronic conditions. Unstable patients take priority over stable patients.
Leadership and Management Styles
Autocratic leadership involves making decisions without staff input and is appropriate in emergencies. Democratic leadership encourages team participation and is ideal for routine situations. Laissez-faire leadership provides minimal direction and works with highly skilled, motivated teams. Transformational leadership inspires change through vision and motivation.
Ethical and Legal Principles
Know the differences between beneficence (doing good), nonmaleficence (do no harm), autonomy (patient self-determination), justice (fair distribution of resources), and fidelity (keeping promises). Understand advance directives, informed consent requirements, mandatory reporting obligations, and HIPAA privacy rules.
