Understanding the NCLEX Passing Standard

How Pass/Fail Is Determined

The NCLEX uses the logit measurement to determine your ability level. The passing standard is set by the NCSBN board of directors and is reviewed every 3 years. The computer continues asking questions until it is 95% confident you are either above or below this standard.

When the Exam Ends

• The computer determines with 95% confidence you are above or below the passing standard
• You reach the maximum number of questions (145)
• You run out of time (5 hours)

Common Misconceptions

• Myth: Fewer questions means you passed. Reality: The exam stops at 75 whether you clearly passed OR clearly failed
• Myth: Getting hard questions means you're doing well. Reality: The CAT algorithm adjusts difficulty for everyone
• Myth: You need to answer a certain percentage correctly. Reality: The algorithm considers difficulty, not percentage correct

• Prepare thoroughly and trust your preparation
• Answer each question to the best of your ability
• Don't try to "read" the exam pattern
