Understanding the NCLEX Computerized Adaptive Testing Algorithm
The NCLEX uses Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) to determine competency. Understanding how the algorithm works can reduce test anxiety and help you develop better strategies during the exam.
How CAT Works
The CAT algorithm adjusts question difficulty based on your performance. When you answer a question correctly, the next question becomes more difficult. When you answer incorrectly, the next question becomes easier. Your ability estimate is recalculated after each question. The algorithm continuously narrows its estimate of your competency level.
The 95% Confidence Interval Rule
The computer uses a 95% confidence interval to make its pass/fail decision. If your ability estimate is clearly above the passing standard with 95% confidence, you pass. If it is clearly below with 95% confidence, you fail. The exam continues until this confidence threshold is reached, you reach the maximum number of questions (145 for RN), or you run out of time (5 hours).
What This Means for Test-Taking
Do not gauge your performance by the number of questions you receive. Shutting off at the minimum (85 questions for RN) can mean you clearly passed or clearly failed. More questions simply mean the algorithm needs more data to reach a confident decision. Focus on each individual question rather than counting or tracking perceived difficulty.
Strategies for CAT Success
Answer every question thoughtfully regardless of perceived difficulty. Use the full allotted time per question rather than rushing. Do not change answers unless you have a clear reason. The algorithm gives credit for higher-level questions answered correctly, so welcome challenging questions as opportunities to demonstrate competency. After the Exam
Results are typically available within 48 hours through your state board of nursing. The Pearson VUE trick (attempting to re-register) is not an official method and should not be relied upon.
