Registered Nurse (RN)

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN/LVN)
- Data collection (not assessment)
- Reinforce teaching (not initial teaching)
- Stable, predictable clients
- Medication administration (varies by state - some states allow IV meds with additional training)
- Wound care, dressing changes
- Tracheostomy suctioning
Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP/CNA)
- Activities of daily living (bathing, grooming, feeding)
- Vital signs on stable clients
- Intake and output
- Ambulation assistance
- Specimen collection (routine)
- CPR in emergencies
Key NCLEX Rule
If it requires clinical judgment, assessment, teaching, or evaluation, it MUST be done by the RN. When in doubt, the answer is "the RN should do this."
